dalit fury keeps 12 states on the boil,14 killed, 7 in mP
At least 14 persons were killed, including seven in Madhya Pradesh, and hundreds injured in violence on Monday as Dalit protesters blocked trains, clashed with police and set fire to vehicles across 12 states during a nationwide bandh against the alleged dilution of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. While three persons were killed in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, one died in Rajasthan.
The situation in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh is especially bad. Thousands have been detained across the 12 states. The seven killed in Madhya Pradesh include three each from Gwalior and Bhind, and one from Morena.
Curfew in Gwalior
The violence and arson in Madhya Pradesh also resulted in injuries to over 100 people including police officers. Protesters also torched several vehicles and disrupted the services of nearly 30 trains coming to or passing through the state. Curfew has been imposed in at least seven towns of Gwalior, Bhind and Morena districts.
Violence in Punjab
In Punjab, hundreds of protesters carrying swords, sticks, baseball bats and flags forced shops to shut in Jalandhar, Amritsar and Bathinda. Clashes and arson were reported from a few towns in Rajasthan, including state capital Jaipur and Barmer. Over 100 passenger and mail train services were affected on Monday, while nine were cancelled.
Forces sent to Chambal and Gwalior regions
16 units of Special Armed Force, four companies of Rapid Action Force, 2 of STF and 550 trainee sub-inspectors who have passed out from Police Training School, Bhauri in Bhopal on Monday, were sent to Gwalior and Chambal regions to bring the violence under control.The Union home ministry has also sent anti-riot police personnel to MP
