Liver-Brain Link Plays A Key Role In Overeating: Study

Working odd hours or night shifts was found to disrupt signals liver sends to the brain telling it if eating is happening in sync with the body's clock, a result that researchers said could help treat the negative effects of eating at unusual times, such as overeating. Eating at irregular times is said to be related to weight gain and diabetes, largely because it is not in sync with one's body clock, or circadian rhythm -- a 24-hour cycle of physical, mental, and behavioural changes, including sleeping and eating. Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania, US, found that working unusual hours disturbs the liver's internal clock and its signals, because of which the brain overcompensates, thereby leading to overeating at the wrong times. The results, published in the journal Science, suggested that targeting specific parts of the vagus nerve -- via which the liver communicates with the brain -- could help address overeating in people working night shifts or experienci

After Laying Off 15,000 Employees, Intel Revives Free Coffee and Tea Perk to Lift Employee Morale

Intel has reinstated free coffee and tea at its workplaces after major job layoffs. The benefit was removed last summer as part of the company's $10 billion yearly cost-cutting plan. This action is viewed as a modest but significant attempt to raise staff morale in the wake of recent budget cuts. In a message shared with staff on its internal platform, the chip giant stressed the value of small comforts in everyday routines while acknowledging persistent cost issues in the company. The note read, "Although Intel still faces cost challenges, we understand that small comforts play a significant role in our daily routines. We know this is a small step, but we hope it is a meaningful one in supporting our workplace culture," as quoted by The Oregonian . However, free fruit, which was previously a popular employee perk, will not make a return. Back in August, Intel announced that its 15,000 employees would be let go through layoffs or voluntary separation. Notices on the red

Study Links High-Fat Dairy Consumption To Increased Risk Of Fatty Liver Disease

Eating high-fat dairy products which include whole milk, cream, frozen yoghurt, butter, and ghee, may increase the risk of fatty liver disease, according to a study. The study, published in the Journal of Hepatology Reports, showed that low-medium fat dairy products such as skimmed milk, cottage cheese, and low-fat cheese may be protective, and should be preferred over high-fat dairy to prevent Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). MASLD is related to nutrition, but evidence of an association between high-fat and low-fat dairy products is lacking. To fill the gap, a team of researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, in Israel, evaluated this association by performing experimental studies in mice and an observational human study. They found that low-medium fat low-sugar dairy products are more protective than high-fat dairy. In general, high-fat diets may be harmful. "It would be advisable to prefer low-fat low-sugar dairy products and minimi
